When we decided to give Nimbus Soy Milk a try, we were desperate. We were SICK of going through endless tetra paks (which are hard to recycle) every week and feeling guilty about it.
Nimbus is a brand that is committed to sustainability, and they offer a solution to tetra paks. Nimbus pouches (made from recycled plastic) contain a powdered soy milk base that you mix with water at home.
So how does it taste? And is it worth switching to? Here’s everything you need to know based on our experience.
Why We Tried Nimbus Soy Milk
We’re always looking for better, more sustainable choices. Nimbus caught our eye because they focus on reducing waste and keeping things local. Their soy milk isn’t packed into tetra paks, instead it comes in pouch made of recycled plastic.
You simply add water, shake, and you’re good to go.
We also liked that each serving of soy milk is packed with plant-based protein, making it a solid addition to our daily routine.
TL;DR: We chose Nimbus because it’s a lower-waste alternative packed with simple ingredients and protein.
How We Use Nimbus Soy Milk
We’ll be honest: we didn’t love it in our coffee. But to be fair, we have never been ‘soy milk in our coffee’ kind of people.
If you’re used to the creaminess of oat milk or cow’s milk in your coffee, soy might not give you the same experience, no matter the brand.
That said, Nimbus soy milk has found a permanent home in our smoothies.
It blends beautifully into our daily mixes of fruit, greens, and chia seeds. The mild flavor lets everything else shine, and it adds a little protein boost to kickstart the day. Plus, it feels good knowing it’s made with less environmental impact.
TL;DR: Nimbus didn’t win us over in coffee, but it’s become a daily essential in our smoothies.
Why We Love Nimbus
1. Less Packaging Waste
Tetra paks are difficult to recycle. Even though many brands market them as “recyclable,” tetra paks are made from layers of cardboard, plastic, and aluminum. Separating those layers requires specialized recycling plants, and in Australia (and globally), most tetra paks still end up in landfill.
Nimbus skips the tetra pak altogether. Instead, they send milk bases in minimal, mostly recycled packaging. The pouch can then be recycled via Soft Plastic schemes or can be shipped back to Nimbus to be recycled.
Nimbus products require 90% less packaging than traditional milk cartons.
Is their packaging perfect? No, but it dramatically cuts down on hard-to-recycle waste.
2. Lower Carbon Footprint from Transport
Tetra pak soy milk is mostly water. When you buy ready-to-drink soy milk, a huge percentage (typically around 90%) of the carton’s weight and volume is just water. Transporting all that water across the country burns unnecessary fuel.
Nimbus sends only the concentrate. You add water at home. This means:
- Less weight being transported
- Fewer delivery trucks needed
- Lower overall emissions linked to each order
It’s a smarter, more efficient supply chain.
3. Longer Shelf Life Before Mixing
Tetra pak milk is shelf-stable but once opened, it expires fast. This leads to food waste when people don’t use it up in time.
Nimbus concentrate lasts longer. Unmixed, it stays fresh for months. You only mix what you need, helping you avoid pouring spoiled milk down the drain, which saves all the resources that went into making it.
About Nimbus: Common Questions Answered
What makes Nimbus different from supermarket milk?
Nimbus isn’t fresh milk in a bottle. It’s a milk concentrate you mix yourself. That means less packaging, less transport weight, and longer shelf life before mixing. It’s a clever way to cut down on waste without sacrificing quality.
How do you prepare Nimbus milk?
It’s simple: you add water to the concentrate according to the instructions, give it a good shake, and your milk is ready. You can mix only what you need, so nothing goes to waste.
Where is Nimbus milk made?
Nimbus is proudly Australian owned and operated. It makes its milk locally too.
Is Nimbus soy milk good for protein?
Yes. Soy milk naturally contains more protein than many other plant-based milks. Nimbus is no exception, making it a great choice for anyone looking to add more plant protein to their diet.
How long does Nimbus milk last?
Nimbus powder will last at least 6 months if stored in a cool, dark place. Once shaken with water, your milk should be stored in the fridge and consumed within 3-5 days.
Can you use Nimbus soy milk in cooking?
Absolutely. While we love it in smoothies, it would also work well in baking, sauces, and other recipes where a mild, creamy plant milk is needed.
Would We Recommend Nimbus?
If you’re looking for a fresh, sustainable soy milk option that fits easily into smoothies, cereals, and cooking, Nimbus is an excellent choice.
If your goal is to find the perfect milk alternative for your coffee, and you’re not already a soy milk coffee drinker, you might want to trial it first. But for everything else, especially smoothies, it’s become a firm favourite in our kitchen.
Plus, knowing we’re cutting down on single-use packaging makes it taste even better.
TL;DR: Fresh, simple, high-protein, and better for the environment. Great for smoothies and daily use, maybe not our coffee favourite, but definitely a staple for our pantry.
